Chicago O’Hare Airport Map
The Chicago O’Hare Airport map below shows the full layout of O’Hare International Airport (ORD/KORD), the busiest airport in the United States by aircraft movements in 2025 with 857,392 takeoffs and landings. ORD is a major hub for United Airlines and American Airlines, with 30+ carriers serving over 250 destinations worldwide.
As the O’Hare Airport map shows, the layout has four passenger terminals numbered 1, 2, 3 and 5 — there is no Terminal 4. Terminals 1–3 form a horseshoe-shaped domestic core connected by airside walkways, while Terminal 5 sits about a mile east and handles international arrivals plus several domestic airlines. The free Airport Transit System (ATS) people mover connects all terminals. Study the ORD airport map before you travel so you know which terminal your airline uses.

O’Hare Airport Terminals Overview
O’Hare has four passenger terminals with nine lettered concourses. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 form a connected domestic complex — you can walk between them airside after clearing security. Terminal 5 is the international terminal, located about a mile east of the main complex, accessible via the ATS people mover or an airside transfer bus. There is no Terminal 4 at O’Hare (the number was retired in the 1990s).
O’Hare Airport Security Checkpoints
Each terminal at O’Hare has its own security checkpoint on the departures level (Level 2). Checkpoints at Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are generally open from approximately 3:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily. Terminal 5 security operates 24 hours. TSA PreCheck lanes are available at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. CLEAR lanes are available at Terminals 1, 2 and 5.
Airport Transit System (ATS)
O’Hare Terminal 1 — United Airlines Hub
O’Hare Terminal 1 is United Airlines’ home base, handling both domestic and international United flights. Designed by Helmut Jahn, it features the famous neon-lit underground tunnel connecting Concourse B to the satellite Concourse C.
Concourse B connects directly to the terminal building (22 gates). Concourse C is a satellite reached via the underground pedestrian tunnel between gates B8 and B9 — one of the most photographed spots at ORD. Walk airside to Terminal 2 via the connector near gate B5/B6.
O’Hare Terminal 2
O’Hare Terminal 2 serves a mix of carriers across Concourses E and F with 41 gates. It sits between Terminals 1 and 3 and is connected to both by airside walkways, making it a convenient hub for connections.
Gates F24 and F25 are on the lower level, accessible by escalator. Walk to Terminal 1 via the connector near gate E1, or to Terminal 3 via the connector near gate F1. Ride-share pick-up for all ORD passengers is centralised outside Terminal 2 upper level (doors 2A–2F).
O’Hare Terminal 3 — American Airlines Hub
O’Hare Terminal 3 is the largest terminal at the airport with 80 gates across four concourses. It is American Airlines’ primary hub and also hosts several international oneworld and other partner airlines.
Terminal 3 is sprawling — the walk between the far ends of Concourse G and Concourse L can take 15–20 minutes. Concourse L gates L20–L27 are along a connector bridge. The airside terminal transfer bus to Terminal 5 departs from near gate G17 and gate K20. The $300 million ElevateT3 renovation is upgrading concessions and passenger amenities.
O’Hare Terminal 5 — International Terminal
O’Hare Terminal 5 is the primary international terminal and is geographically separate from the domestic complex. All non-precleared international arrivals clear U.S. Customs here. Terminal 5 also serves several domestic airlines including Delta, Southwest and Frontier.
Terminal 5 has three gates capable of handling A380-sized aircraft. After passing security, gates M18–M40 are to the left, M13–M17 straight ahead, and M1–M11 to the right. International arriving passengers must clear Customs in Terminal 5 before connecting to domestic terminals.
Walking Between Terminals on the O’Hare Airport Map
Unlike many airports, O’Hare has a split layout. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are physically connected by airside walkways on the departures level — once you clear security in any of the three, you can walk to any gate in the other two without re-screening. Terminal 5, however, is about a mile from the main complex and has no airside walkway to the other terminals.
Connection Options Between Terminal 5 and Terminals 1–3
If you are connecting between Terminal 5 and the domestic terminals, you have two choices. The airside terminal transfer bus runs every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and does not require re-screening — it departs from gate areas in Terminals 1, 3 and 5. Outside those hours (or if you need to collect checked luggage), take the ATS people mover landside, but you will need to re-clear security at your destination terminal. Allow at least 60–90 minutes for international-to-domestic connections requiring customs clearance in Terminal 5.
Getting to O’Hare Airport
O’Hare is well connected by train, bus and road. The CTA Blue Line station is in the lower level of the main parking garage, with direct pedestrian access to Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Passengers at Terminal 5 can reach the Blue Line by riding the ATS to the main terminal complex.

O’Hare Airport Map — Arrivals
If you are arriving at O’Hare or meeting a passenger, domestic arrivals deplane at their airline’s terminal and proceed to baggage claim on the lower (arrivals) level. International arrivals go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Terminal 5 — passengers with precleared flights (e.g. from Dublin, Toronto) may arrive at other terminals.
Ground Transportation from Arrivals
Baggage claim carousels are on the lower level of each terminal. From there, passengers can access ride-share pick-up (upper level at Terminals 2 and 3), the CTA Blue Line station (lower level of main parking garage, connected to Terminals 1–3), taxis, rental car shuttles at the MMF via ATS, and hotel shuttles on the lower level. If picking someone up by car, use the free cell phone waiting lot at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive.
O’Hare Airport Map — Departures
Departing passengers should check which terminal their airline uses before arriving at O’Hare — the domestic terminals (1–3) and Terminal 5 are not adjacent. Enter your terminal on the upper level (departures) via curbside drop-off or the parking garage. Check in at your airline’s counter on Level 2, then proceed to the security checkpoint on the same level. After clearing security, follow signs to your concourse and gate.
Recommended Arrival Times
Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. O’Hare’s peak security periods are 6–9 a.m. and 3–5 p.m. Check-in counters and bag drop desks typically close 45–60 minutes before departure. Real-time TSA wait times are available at flychicago.com.
Insider Tips
Terminal 3 is enormous — allow 15–20 minutes to walk between far-end gates in Concourses G and L. The underground tunnel between Concourses B and C in Terminal 1 has a famous neon light installation — worth a quick look if time allows. Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available in all terminals, no login required. Charging stations are scattered throughout but can be scarce during busy periods — bring a portable charger. Ride-share pick-up is only at Terminals 2 and 3, so arriving T1 and T5 passengers must transfer via ATS. For dining, Tortas Frontera by Rick Bayless has locations in Terminals 1, 3 and 5 — widely considered some of the best airport food in the country.
