Detroit Airport Map
The Detroit Airport map below shows the full layout of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW/KDTW). DTW handled 33.4 million passengers in 2025, ranking among the busiest airports in the Midwest. It is the second-largest hub for Delta Air Lines, with 18 scheduled airlines serving over 125 nonstop destinations across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
As you can see on the Detroit Airport map, DTW has two separate terminals on opposite sides of the airfield: the McNamara Terminal (Delta and SkyTeam partners) and the Evans Terminal (all other airlines). The terminals are not connected inside security — a free shuttle runs between them. Study the DTW airport map before you travel so you know which terminal your airline uses.

Detroit Airport Location Map
Detroit Metropolitan Airport is located in Romulus, Michigan, approximately 22 miles (35 km) southwest of downtown Detroit. The Detroit Airport location map below shows DTW’s position relative to the city and surrounding road network. The airport is accessed via I-94 (from Detroit and Ann Arbor), I-275 (from northern and southern suburbs) and John Dingell Drive, which connects the two terminals.
Detroit Airport Terminals Overview
Detroit Airport has two completely separate passenger terminals. Unlike many two-terminal airports, you cannot walk between them — they sit on opposite sides of the airfield, connected by John Dingell Drive and a free shuttle bus. The most important thing to know before arriving at DTW is which terminal your airline uses.
McNamara Terminal — Delta Airlines Hub
The Edward H. McNamara Terminal is DTW’s larger terminal and Delta Air Lines’ second-largest hub worldwide. It houses three concourses (A, B and C) with 121 gates, extensive dining and shopping in the Central Link area, and the iconic 700-foot LED light tunnel connecting Concourses A and B/C. The on-site Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport Hotel connects directly to the terminal.
McNamara Terminal — Concourse A
Concourse A is the centrepiece of the McNamara Terminal and the second-longest airport concourse in the world at nearly one mile (1.6 km). The ExpressTram elevated train runs the full length with three stops, and the Central Link shopping and dining area sits at the midpoint.
The ExpressTram has three stations: South (gates A1–A28), Terminal (A29–A55) and North (A56–A78). The famous 700-foot LED light tunnel connects the south end of Concourse A to Concourses B and C.
McNamara Terminal — Concourses B & C
Concourses B and C are smaller satellite concourses accessed via the underground pedestrian tunnel (with the iconic LED light show) from the south end of Concourse A. Both serve Delta regional and mainline flights.
International arrivals at the McNamara Terminal clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the lower level of Concourse A before proceeding to the terminal.
Evans Terminal — All Other Airlines
The Warren Cleage Evans Terminal (formerly the North Terminal) serves every airline at DTW that is not part of the SkyTeam alliance. It opened in 2008 and was renamed in 2022. It has a single concourse (D) with 29 gates, making it straightforward to navigate. The Big Blue Deck parking garage connects via a pedestrian skybridge.
All charter flights also operate from the Evans Terminal. The Lufthansa Business and Senator Lounge between gates D7 and D8 accepts Priority Pass members outside peak hours.
Detroit Airport Security Checkpoints
Each terminal at DTW has its own TSA security checkpoint. You must go through security at the terminal your airline uses — there is no airside connection between the McNamara and Evans terminals. DTW uses CT scanners at all checkpoints, so you do not need to remove laptops or liquids from your bags.
Getting Between Terminals at Detroit Airport
The McNamara Terminal and Evans Terminal are not connected inside security. They sit on opposite sides of the airport, separated by the airfield and John Dingell Drive. If you need to transfer between terminals for a connecting flight, you must exit the secure area, take the free terminal shuttle, and re-clear security at the other terminal.
Terminal Shuttle
A free shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes between the Ground Transportation Centers at the McNamara Terminal, Evans Terminal and the Westin Hotel. The ride takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Allow at least 30 minutes total for an inter-terminal connection, including the time to exit security, ride the shuttle and clear security again.
Getting to Detroit Airport
Ground transportation departs from the Ground Transportation Center at each terminal (lower level at McNamara, skybridge level at Evans).

Detroit Airport Map — Arrivals
If you are arriving at Detroit Airport or meeting a passenger, the arrivals area is on the lower level of each terminal. After landing, passengers walk (or ride the ExpressTram in Concourse A) to the terminal, proceed to baggage claim on the lower level, and exit to the Ground Transportation Center. International arrivals at the McNamara Terminal clear Customs and Border Protection in Concourse A before reaching the terminal.
Ground Transportation from Arrivals
Baggage claim carousels are on the lower level of both terminals. From there, follow signs to the Ground Transportation Center for taxis, ride-shares, rental car shuttles, the DAX bus and the terminal shuttle. For Uber/Lyft at the McNamara Terminal, proceed to Level 1 of the McNamara Parking Garage. At the Evans Terminal, cross the skybridge to the Big Blue Deck and take the elevator to Level 1. If picking someone up by car, use the free cell phone waiting lot and collect your passenger from the lower-level pick-up lanes.
Detroit Airport Map — Departures
Departing passengers should enter the upper level of their terminal via curbside drop-off or the parking garage walkway/skybridge. Check in at your airline’s ticket counter, then proceed through the TSA security checkpoint. In the McNamara Terminal, security leads to Concourse A — use the ExpressTram or walk to reach your gate, and take the underground tunnel for Concourses B and C. In the Evans Terminal, security leads directly to Concourse D.
Recommended Arrival Times
Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. DTW’s CT scanners speed up security, but allow extra time during peak morning hours (5–8 a.m.) and holidays. If connecting between terminals, add at least 30 minutes for the shuttle transfer and re-screening.
Insider Tips
DTW is consistently rated among the best airports in North America for passenger satisfaction. The CT scanners mean no laptop or liquid removal at security — a genuine time-saver. In the McNamara Terminal, ride the ExpressTram rather than walking Concourse A end-to-end (it is nearly a mile). Don’t miss the LED light tunnel between Concourses A and B/C — it’s a DTW landmark and great for photos. If you have a long layover, the Westin Hotel is accessible from inside the McNamara Terminal. Ride-share availability drops significantly between midnight and 5 a.m., so plan ahead for late-night arrivals.
