Dulles Airport Location Map
Washington Dulles International Airport is located 26 miles (42 km) west of downtown Washington, D.C., in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, Virginia. Dulles Airport Terminal — Main Terminal
The Eero Saarinen-designed Main Terminal is the sole landside building at Dulles Airport, recognised worldwide for its sweeping, hammock-like roof. The Dulles airport terminal handles all check-in, security, baggage claim and ground transportation across two main levels, with four ticketing areas on the upper departures level and baggage claim spanning the lower arrivals level.

Dulles Airport Security Checkpoints
All Dulles airport security is on the Departures/Ticketing level of the Main Terminal. Three checkpoints — East Security, West Security and a dedicated TSA PreCheck lane between them — serve departing passengers. CLEAR is available at the East checkpoint and at the PreCheck entrance.
Getting to Your Gate After Security
Dulles Airport Concourse A — International Gateway
Dulles Airport Concourse A is the primary international concourse, reachable by AeroTrain or the pedestrian walkway from the Main Terminal. As shown on the Dulles Airport map, Concourses A and B share a connected pier north of the terminal.
Most international flights on non-United carriers depart from Concourse A. The lower-level gates (A1A–A6A) serve regional aircraft. Sleepbox nap pod micro-hotel is located between gates A6 and A14.
Dulles Airport Concourse B — Domestic & International Mix
Dulles Airport Concourse B is connected to Concourse A in the same pier and houses most non-United domestic carriers plus several international airlines. Reachable by AeroTrain or the pedestrian walkway (~10 min walk with moving sidewalks).
Concourse B has 13,000 sq ft of retail space. The FunWay children’s play area (developed with NASA) is near gate B70. Nursing room also near B70.
Dulles Airport Concourses C & D — United Airlines Hub
Dulles Airport Concourses C and D form the southern midfield pier and are used exclusively by United Airlines. Concourse C is served by the AeroTrain (third stop, ~5–7 min from terminal). Concourse D has no AeroTrain station — reach it by walking through Concourse C or riding a mobile lounge shuttle from the Main Terminal (~15 min).

No AeroTrain station at Concourse D. Walk from Concourse C (~1,600 ft / ~500 m) or take the mobile lounge shuttle directly from the Main Terminal. Mobile lounges depart from the mid-concourse area near gates D5–D8. Nursing room near D1.
Dulles Airport Z Gates
The Z Gates are a small four-gate mini-concourse (20,800 sq ft) directly attached to the Main Terminal on the airside. After clearing security, turn left and follow signs. Used for regional and commuter flights.
Getting Between Concourses on the Dulles Airport Map
Dulles Airport uses a hybrid transport system to move passengers between the terminal and concourses. The AeroTrain underground people mover serves the Main Terminal, Concourses A, B and C with fully automated three-car trains running 24 hours a day. A 1,000-foot pedestrian walkway with moving sidewalks also connects the terminal directly to the A/B pier. Concourse D has no train station and is served by mobile lounge shuttles or on foot from Concourse C.
Connection Times Between Concourses
After clearing security on the upper level, take the escalator down to the AeroTrain station. Stops are: Concourse A/B (first stop, ~2–3 minutes), Concourse C (second stop, ~5–7 minutes). For Concourse D, either ride the AeroTrain to C and walk (~8–10 min from C station) or take a mobile lounge directly from the terminal (~15 min). You do not need to re-clear security when transferring between concourses. Allow at least 45 minutes for connections involving Concourse D, and 30 minutes for connections between A/B and C.

Dulles Airport Map — Arrivals
If you are arriving at Dulles Airport or meeting a passenger, the arrivals area is on the lower level of the Main Terminal. After landing, domestic passengers take the AeroTrain (or mobile lounge from Concourse D) back to the terminal and proceed up to baggage claim. International arrivals go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the International Arrivals Building on the west side of the terminal before reaching the baggage hall.
Ground Transportation from Arrivals
Baggage claim carousels (1–15) span the full width of the lower level. From there, you can access the Silver Line Metro station (follow signs to underground walkway, ~5 min), taxis and ride-shares (arrivals curb), rental car shuttles and bus services (Garage 1, Stop 2). If picking someone up by car, use the free Cell Phone Waiting Lot on Autopilot Drive and collect your passenger from the lower-level arrivals curb.
Dulles Airport Map — Departures
Departing passengers should enter the Main Terminal on the upper departures level via curbside drop-off or the parking garage walkways. Check in at one of the four airline ticketing areas, then proceed to the East or West security checkpoint — or the dedicated TSA PreCheck lane between them. After clearing security, head down to the AeroTrain station, walk the pedestrian corridor to A/B, take a mobile lounge to D, or walk to the Z Gates.
Recommended Arrival Times
Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. Check-in counters and bag drop desks typically close 45–60 minutes before departure. Peak security hours are 5–9 a.m. and late afternoon. Gate assignments are shown on flight information screens throughout the terminal and on your airline’s app.
Insider Tips
The Dulles Access Road is restricted to airport traffic only — do not exit early or you risk a ticket. The Silver Line Metro is the most affordable way to reach downtown D.C. but plan for ~60 minutes. If your gate is in Concourse D, allow extra time — there is no AeroTrain stop, and the walk from Concourse C is long. Peak security at Dulles is 5–9 a.m. weekdays.
