Istanbul Airport Map

The Istanbul Airport map below shows the full layout of Istanbul Airport (IST/LTFM). Opened in 2018 and fully operational since April 2019, IST handled over 76 million passengers in 2025 and has been Europe’s busiest airport for four consecutive years. Its single terminal building covers 1,440,000 m² — the largest terminal under one roof on the planet. Turkish Airlines uses IST as its primary global hub, and 116 scheduled airlines serve 330+ destinations worldwide from here.

As you can see on the Istanbul Airport map, the terminal is a vast single structure with five departure piers branching from a central hub. Piers A, B, D and F handle international flights; Pier G plus three boarding areas of Pier F serve domestic routes. There is no internal train or automated people mover between piers — movement is on foot via moving walkways, and walks between distant gates can take 20 to 30 minutes. Study the IST airport map before you travel so you know exactly where your pier is and how much time to allow.

Istanbul Airport Terminal

Istanbul Airport currently operates from one terminal building, the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. The terminal spans 1,440,000 m² and handles all departures, arrivals, transfers, check-in and baggage claim under one roof. The departures level is on the upper floor, with curbside drop-off outside via a split-level roadway. Arrivals are on the lower level. The transport floor (level -2) is where passengers access the M11 metro, Havaist buses and taxi ranks after collecting luggage.

Check-in desks run across zones B through S in the main hall. Doors 1 and 2 are most convenient for domestic flights; doors 3 through 7 lead more directly to international check-in. Specific aisles serve different passenger groups: aisle D and E counters (plus the self-service area near aisle E) handle domestic check-in, while international passengers use aisles E through J. Check-in aisle K is designated for passengers from the US, UK and Canada. Star Alliance Gold members and Turkish Airlines business class passengers should head to aisle L.

🔔
Quiet airport: Istanbul Airport makes no boarding or gate change announcements over the public address system. Download the iGA Istanbul Airport app or your airline’s app before you travel — gate changes happen without warning and are only displayed on screens and in-app notifications.
📋 Departures Level (Upper)
Check-in zones B to S, curbside drop-off, international and domestic security checkpoints, passport control and airside concessions.
🏷 Arrivals Level (Lower)
Baggage carousels, customs, arrivals hall for meeters and greeters. Transport floor (level -2) has metro, buses and taxis.
🔒 Security
Two checkpoints: international (centre of terminal) and domestic (east end near aisle D). Fast Track lanes at both. No TSA PreCheck (Turkish airport).
🏫 Hotel Onsite
YOTEL Istanbul Airport is the only hotel directly inside the terminal building, accessible without leaving the airport complex.

Istanbul Airport Security Checkpoints

The terminal has two TSA security checkpoints. The international checkpoint is located at the centre of the departures floor and leads to the main airside concessions area and all international piers (A, B, D and F). The domestic checkpoint is at the east end of the building near check-in aisles D and E, leading to Pier G and the domestic departure area. Fast Track lanes are available at both checkpoints. Neither is a U.S. TSA checkpoint — TSA PreCheck is an American program and does not apply at Istanbul Airport.

🔒 International Checkpoint
Centre of the departures floor. Leads to passport control and then to the main airside concessions hall and international piers A, B, D and F. Fast Track available.
🔒 Domestic Checkpoint
East end of the terminal near check-in aisles D and E. Leads to domestic passport control and Pier G. Fast Track available.
💡
Tip: Allow at least 3 hours before international departures. The terminal is enormous and the walk from the security checkpoint to the furthest international gates can be 20 to 30 minutes alone. Peak security queues form early morning and late evening. Use Fast Track if eligible.
🚶 No internal train: Unlike many major airports, Istanbul Airport has no automated people mover or shuttle between piers. All inter-pier movement is on foot through the secure airside area, assisted by moving walkways. Budget 20 to 30 minutes for transfers between gates on different piers.

Istanbul Airport Pier A

Pier A is on the southwest side of the terminal and is one of the main international gate areas. It is accessible from the airside concessions hall through the west entrance after clearing the international security checkpoint. Pier A has 29 departure gates and a small selection of shops, dining options and an Xpres Spa. The iGA Pop-Up Lounge is also located in Pier A for passengers who want a paid lounge option close to these gates.

Gates run A1A through A10A. Pier A shares the same west entrance as Pier B. If your airline check-in counter is on the south side of the hall, this pier tends to be faster to reach than Pier F or D.

Istanbul Airport Pier B

Pier B is on the southwest side of the terminal, accessed via the same west entrance as Pier A. It handles 27 international gates and includes the Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles Lounge, making it the most convenient lounge option for Miles & Smiles members flying from this side of the terminal. Shops and dining are available throughout the pier.

Istanbul Airport Pier D

Pier D sits at the north end of the terminal on the lower level and is reached by escalators from the main airside concessions area. It is the smallest of the international piers, with 17 gates. Pier D has a more limited concessions offering but includes a prayer room alongside standard dining and retail.

Pier D is accessed by escalators from the central concessions area. It is on the lower level, so allow extra time to reach it from check-in.

Istanbul Airport Pier F

Pier F is on the northeast side of the terminal, accessed via escalators on the east side of the transfer level. It is the largest pier by gate count with 26 gates serving international flights, plus three boarding areas at the southern end of Pier F that handle domestic routes. The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge — the airline’s flagship lounge at IST — is located on the mezzanine level above passport control in the international area, near Gate C1 and the entrance to this section of the terminal.

Pier F is the furthest pier from the domestic end of the terminal. If you are connecting from a domestic flight and need to reach Pier F gates, allow at least 30 minutes. Three boarding areas on the south side of Pier F also serve domestic departures.

Istanbul Airport Pier G — Domestic

Pier G is Istanbul Airport’s dedicated domestic pier, handling flights to destinations across Turkey. It is served primarily by Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines. The pier has 35 gates and its own separate security checkpoint and passport control on the east side of the main terminal. Turkish Airlines operates its Domestic CIP Lounge here, and the iGA Domestic Lounge is located opposite Gate G6 after domestic passport control. Domestic passengers enter through doors 1 and 2 on the departures level and check in at aisles D and E.

Domestic passengers do not need to mix with international queues. Use doors 1 and 2, check in at aisles D or E, then proceed to the dedicated domestic security checkpoint. The domestic area is self-contained on the east side of the terminal.

Istanbul Airport Lounges

Istanbul Airport has seven lounges split between the international and domestic areas. All lounges are open 24 hours. In the international departures area there are five options: the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge (flagship, near Gate C1, with cinema, library, private suites and complimentary massages), the Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles Lounge (near Gate 11), the iGA Lounge International (turn left after passport control, mezzanine level), the iGA Pop-Up Lounge (Pier A) and the Primeclass Lounge (Priority Pass accepted). In the domestic area there are two lounges: the Turkish Airlines Domestic CIP Lounge and iGA Domestic Lounge (near Gate G6). The iGA Lounge has a total seating capacity of 650 and is open to any passenger on a pay-per-use basis or with an iGA PASS membership.

Getting to Istanbul Airport

Ground transportation departs from the transport floor at level -2, reached by lift or escalator from the arrivals hall. All transport options — metro, Havaist buses, IETT buses, taxis and car parks — are accessed from this level.

🚇 M11 Metro
Direct line from Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe (10 stops, ~30 min). Runs 06:00–00:00. At Gayrettepe, connect to M2 for Taksim and beyond. Use an Istanbulkart for cheapest fares.
🚌 Havaist Buses
12 routes, 24/7. Key routes: HVL-9 to Taksim, HVL-1 to Aksaray (near Sultanahmet), HVL-6 to Kadıköy. Journey ~60–100 min. Buses equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging.
🚕 Taxi
Official yellow taxis from the taxi rank on the transport floor. Average 45–60 min to city centre. Use BiTaksi or Uber app for metered fares and to avoid overcharging. Always insist on the meter.
🚗 Rental Cars
Major rental agencies are on the transport floor (level -2). Follow signs from arrivals. Pre-book online for best availability, especially in peak summer season.
💴
Istanbulkart tip: Buy an Istanbulkart on arrival at the transport floor kiosks. One card can be used by up to 5 people, and it works on the metro, tram, bus and ferry. It is significantly cheaper than single tickets and saves time at every barrier.

Istanbul Airport Parking

Istanbul Airport has six car park zones, colour coded by terminal type and proximity. Domestic travellers should use the Turquoise or Green car parks. International travellers should use Yellow, Red or Blue. Pre-book at istairport.com for guaranteed spaces and reduced rates, particularly during public holidays and the summer peak.

🟥 Red & Yellow Parking
Closest covered options for international departures. Short and long stay available. Walk to departures level via covered walkways.
🟦 Blue Parking
Additional covered parking for international travellers. Slightly further from terminal but connected via the transport level.
🟩 Turquoise & Green Parking
Designated for domestic travellers. Closest to the east side of the terminal and Pier G check-in doors 1 and 2.
🚘 Open Lots
Economy open parking further from the terminal. Free shuttle service to arrivals and departures levels. Best for multi-day stays.

Istanbul Airport Map — Arrivals

International arrivals land at one of the international piers (A, B, D or F) and walk through the secure airside area to passport control and customs, then exit onto the arrivals level of the main terminal. Baggage carousels are on the arrivals floor. After collecting luggage, passengers take a lift or escalator down to the transport floor (level -2) for taxis, Havaist buses and the M11 metro. Domestic arrivals from Pier G exit directly into the domestic arrivals hall on the east side of the terminal, also leading down to the transport floor.

Meeting Arriving Passengers

Meeters and greeters wait in the arrivals hall on the ground floor. There are separate exits for international and domestic arrivals, each clearly signed. The main meeting point is in the central arrivals hall adjacent to the transport floor access points.

Istanbul Airport Map — Departures

Departing passengers enter on the upper level via doors 1 and 2 for domestic flights and doors 3 to 7 for international. After check-in, international passengers proceed to the central security checkpoint and then through passport control into the main airside concessions hall. From there, moving walkways and signs lead to piers A, B, D and F. Domestic passengers use the east end of the terminal, the separate domestic security checkpoint and proceed to Pier G.

Recommended Arrival Times

Arrive at least 3 hours before international departures. This is not excessive for a terminal this size — the walking distance from the security checkpoint to the furthest gates alone can take 25 to 30 minutes. For domestic flights, 2 hours is the minimum recommended. Check-in counters generally close 60 minutes before departure. Gate assignments and changes are shown only on screens and in the iGA app; no PA announcements are made.

Istanbul Airport Construction & Expansion (2026)

🚧
Fourth runway (2026): Istanbul Airport’s fourth main runway is scheduled to enter service in 2026, pushing total capacity toward 200 million passengers annually. In April 2025, IST became the first airport in Europe to implement triple independent parallel runway operations. Long-term plans call for three additional smaller terminal buildings connected to the main terminal by rail, though no completion date has been confirmed.

Insider Tips for Istanbul Airport

IST is magnificent but genuinely enormous. Wear comfortable shoes and allow far more time than you think you need. The moving walkways help but they do not cover the full distance to every gate. The M11 metro is the fastest and cheapest option into the city during rush hour when road traffic can double taxi journey times. Use BiTaksi or Uber to avoid metering disputes with taxis. The iGA app is essential — set flight notifications on arrival so you catch any gate changes immediately. Currency exchange rates inside the terminal are worse than in the city, so use an ATM or take euros and exchange in town. If you have a long layover, the YOTEL is inside the terminal and the iGA Sleepod cabins offer a cheaper rest option. Refer to the Istanbul Airport map above before you travel so you already know which pier you need.
