Newark Airport Map

The Newark Airport map below shows the full layout of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR/KEWR) — the primary airport serving New Jersey and a critical gateway for the New York metropolitan area. EWR handled 48.9 million passengers in 2024, ranking as the 14th busiest airport in the United States. It is the fourth-largest hub for United Airlines, which accounts for approximately 68% of all traffic, and serves over 50 airlines connecting to destinations worldwide.

As shown on the Newark Airport map, the three terminals — A, B and C — are arranged in an oval configuration. They are not connected by walking; all transfers between terminals use the AirTrain monorail or the Star Alliance courtesy shuttle bus (within the secure airside area). Study the EWR airport map before you travel so you know which terminal your airline uses and how to reach the AirTrain rail station for connections to Manhattan.

Newark Airport Terminals Overview

Newark Liberty International Airport has three passenger terminals arranged in a semi-circle. Each terminal handles its own check-in, security and baggage claim. The terminals are not physically connected — all inter-terminal transfers use the free AirTrain monorail or, for eligible Star Alliance passengers, the courtesy shuttle bus that operates within the secure airside zone. Below is a full breakdown of what you’ll find on the Newark Airport map at each terminal.

Newark Airport Terminal A

Terminal A is the newest and most celebrated terminal at Newark Airport, opening in January 2023 at a cost of $2.7 billion — the largest single infrastructure investment in New Jersey history at the time. It replaced the original 1973 Terminal A and was named the world’s best new airport terminal by Skytrax in 2024, also earning a 5-star Skytrax rating and a UNESCO Prix Versailles award for exterior design.

Newark Airport Terminal B

Terminal B is EWR’s main international terminal, opened in 1973 and still operated directly by the Port Authority. It consists of three concourses (B1, B2 and B3) and handles the bulk of Newark’s long-haul international flights. A major Terminal B rebuild is planned under the Port Authority’s 2026–2035 capital plan through a new public-private partnership.

Concourse B2 has limited shops and restaurants — allow time to use facilities in B1 or B3 before proceeding. Each B concourse has its own security checkpoint; passengers must reclear security when moving between B concourses. International arrivals from non-pre-cleared countries are processed here before connecting to other terminals.

🚧
Planned Rebuild: Under the Port Authority’s 2026–2035 capital plan, Terminal B is earmarked for full demolition and replacement via a public-private partnership, similar to the Terminal A model. No construction start date has been announced as of March 2026.

Newark Airport Terminal C — United Airlines Hub

Terminal C is United Airlines’ exclusive hub at Newark and one of the carrier’s busiest operations in the world. It handled 32.9 million passengers in 2024 — approximately 68% of all EWR traffic. The terminal has been heavily modernised with tablet-based ordering, digital wayfinding and premium lounge facilities across three concourses.

Three security checkpoints lead into a shared central area, so passengers can move freely between all three C concourses without reclearing security. The Star Alliance shuttle departs from near gate C71 to Terminals A and B.

Newark Airport AirTrain

The AirTrain Newark is a 3-mile monorail people-mover connecting all three terminals, parking garages and the Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station (for NJ Transit and Amtrak connections). Travel between terminals is free; a fee of $8.75 applies when exiting at the rail station (as of March 2026). The AirTrain runs every 3–5 minutes from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and approximately every 15 minutes overnight.

🚆 AirTrain stops: Terminal A → Terminal B → Terminal C → P3/P4 parking → Rail Station (NJ Transit/Amtrak). Free between terminals. Fee: $8.75 to/from rail station. Runs 24/7.

New AirTrain Newark (Under Construction)

A brand-new $3.5 billion AirTrain system broke ground in October 2025 to replace the original 1996 monorail. The replacement will use automated, cable-driven trains along a new 2.5-mile elevated alignment with four stations. It is scheduled to open in 2030 and will increase daily capacity from 33,000 to 50,000 riders. During construction, some AirTrain segments to the rail station may be replaced by shuttle buses during certain hours — check the latest advisories at the airport or via the NJ Transit app before travelling.

🚧
AirTrain Construction Advisory (2026): AirTrain service between terminals and the rail station may be partially replaced by shuttle buses on weekday mornings (approx. 5 a.m.–3 p.m.) during construction phases. The P3 station reopened January 2026 as a temporary shuttle pickup area. Allow extra time for rail station connections and check current advisories before travelling.

Getting Between Terminals at Newark Airport

The three terminals at EWR are separate buildings in an oval formation. You cannot walk between them landside or airside. There are two options for moving between terminals after clearing security:

Option 1: AirTrain (All Passengers)

Board the AirTrain at your terminal station and ride to the target terminal. Travel time between any two terminals is typically 5–10 minutes. The AirTrain runs 24/7 and is free between terminals. You do not need to reclear security on arrival at another terminal if you remain in the secure airside area — except in Terminal B, where each concourse has its own checkpoint.

Option 2: Star Alliance Shuttle Bus (Eligible Passengers)

United Airlines operates a courtesy shuttle bus for Star Alliance passengers entirely within the secure airside zone. Buses depart from near gates A28, B68 and C71. This service avoids the need to exit to the AirTrain platform and is the fastest way to transfer between terminals for Star Alliance passengers. Non-Star Alliance passengers and international arrivals undergoing customs clearance must use the AirTrain and reclear security.

💡
Connection tip: Allow at least 45–60 minutes for any connection requiring a terminal change at EWR. In Terminal B, moving between concourses requires reclearing a security checkpoint — factor in extra time for B2 gates (B51–B58) which have fewer food and retail options.

Newark Airport Security

Each terminal operates its own security checkpoints. Terminal A has a fully automated checkpoint — the first of its kind in the United States — with sensor-optimised lanes that eliminate the need to remove laptops and liquids. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are available at all three terminals. Security is busiest between 6–9 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. on weekdays. Arrive at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and 150 minutes before international flights.

Newark Airport Map — Arrivals

Arriving passengers land at their assigned terminal (A, B or C) and take the AirTrain or walk the secured concourse to reach baggage claim. International passengers arriving at Terminal B go through U.S. Customs and Border Protection before proceeding to baggage claim. After collecting bags, ground transportation is available at the arrivals level of each terminal: taxis, Uber/Lyft, NJ Transit buses, and the AirTrain to the rail station.

International Arrivals Note

Most international flights arrive at Terminal B. After clearing U.S. Customs and exiting the secure area, international passengers connecting to domestic flights must take the AirTrain to the appropriate terminal and reclear security. JetBlue international arrivals from non-pre-cleared countries are also processed at Terminal B even if the departure gate is in Terminal A.

Newark Airport Map — Departures

Departing passengers should enter their terminal via the curbside drop-off or parking garage walkway. Check in at your airline’s counter, then proceed to that terminal’s security checkpoint. After clearing security, follow signs to your gate. If you need to change terminals after security, use the AirTrain (all passengers) or the Star Alliance shuttle bus (United Airlines and partner airline passengers) — both options keep you within the secure airside zone except for Terminal B, where each concourse has its own checkpoint.

Recommended Arrival Times

Arrive at least two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international departures. Check-in counters and bag-drop desks typically close 45–60 minutes before departure. Gate information is displayed on flight information screens throughout all terminals and on your airline’s app. Allow 15–20 extra minutes when travelling from the rail station to your terminal via AirTrain.

Insider Tips

Always check which terminal your airline is using at EWR — some airlines (e.g. Delta, United) operate from more than one terminal, and assignments can shift. Terminal A is by far the most modern and pleasant experience; if given a choice, it is the easiest terminal to navigate. For the fastest security, Terminal A’s automated checkpoint outperforms the other terminals during peak hours. Terminal B’s Starbucks is open 24 hours, useful for very early or very late connections. If flying United from Terminal C, the Polaris Lounge (between gates C102 and C120) is one of the best business-class lounges in the US. On road trips: EWR signage from the New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 13A) is clear and direct — follow the blue EWR signs from Exit 13.
