Oakland Airport Location Map
Oakland Airport is located about 10 miles (16 km) south of downtown Oakland and roughly 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown San Francisco. Oakland Airport Terminals
Oakland Airport has two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Both sit side by side on Airport Drive with their own check-in counters, security checkpoints and baggage claim areas. They are linked post-security by an indoor walkway between Gate 4 (Terminal 1) and Gate 20 (Terminal 2), so connecting passengers do not need to re-clear security. Before security, an outdoor pedestrian walkway between the two buildings takes about five minutes on foot.
Terminal Levels
Oakland Airport Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the larger and more diverse of the two terminals, handling all international arrivals and domestic flights for every airline except Southwest Airlines. It has 16 active gates numbered 1 through 17 (Gate 2 and Gate 13 not in use). Terminal 1 also hosts the airport’s only passenger lounge and its duty-free shop.
International arrivals clear US Customs and Border Protection at dedicated facilities in Terminal 1 before proceeding to baggage claim. Gate 1 handles international departures, with a duty-free store immediately post-security. The Terminal 1–Terminal 2 connector is near Gate 4.
Oakland Airport Terminal 2 — Southwest Airlines
Terminal 2 is used exclusively by Southwest Airlines for domestic flights. It has 12 gates numbered 20 through 32 (Gate 28 not in use). Terminal 2 is the busiest terminal at OAK — Southwest accounts for roughly 80% of the airport’s passenger traffic, making OAK Southwest’s largest California operation.
Gates 23–25 are closest to the security checkpoint; Gates 20–22 are to the right, Gates 26–32 to the left along the main concourse. The post-security connector to Terminal 1 is near Gate 20.

Each terminal has its own TSA security checkpoint on the upper level, located after the airline check-in counters. Both checkpoints have TSA PreCheck and CLEAR lanes. You can use either terminal’s checkpoint to access your gate — the post-security walkway between Gate 4 (T1) and Gate 20 (T2) lets you cross without re-screening.

Arriving passengers deplane at their gate (Terminal 1 or Terminal 2) and follow signs down to the lower level baggage claim. International arrivals land at Terminal 1, clear US Customs and Border Protection, collect bags and exit through the arrivals hall. Domestic arrivals simply follow signs to baggage claim and ground transportation on the lower level. Taxis, Uber, Lyft and the free rental car shuttle are all at the lower level curbside. The BART station is a short walk across the parking area.

If you are picking someone up by car, use the free cell phone waiting area and avoid the premium Premier Parking rates.
