Philadelphia Airport Terminals — Overview

PHL has an unusual but practical layout: seven terminals arranged in a single connected building so that passengers can walk the entire landside and airside without re-clearing security. Departures (check-in, ticketing) are on the upper level of each terminal building, while baggage claim and arrivals are on the lower level, directly across the road from the parking garages. The walk from Terminal A-West to Terminal F at the far end is approximately 1.3 miles and takes around 30 minutes at a brisk pace — free shuttle buses covering the full route for those who prefer not to walk.

Philadelphia Airport Security Checkpoints 2026

PHL consolidated its active security checkpoints as part of its renovation programme. As of 2026, only two checkpoint locations are open: the Terminal A-East checkpoint and the shared Terminal D/E checkpoint. Checkpoints at Terminals A-West, C and F are currently closed. TSA PreCheck is available at both open checkpoints. All passengers — regardless of which terminal their flight departs from — must enter the secure zone through A-East or D/E and then walk or take a shuttle to their gate.

Inter-Terminal Connections

Terminal A-West — International Hub

Terminal A-West is Philadelphia Airport’s main international gateway, handling all long-haul transatlantic and transatlantic flights that do not use US pre-clearance. It is the westernmost terminal in the PHL complex and sits immediately adjacent to Terminal A-East, sharing an arrivals level and baggage claim.

Terminal A-East — Domestic & Pre-Clearance International

Terminal A-East handles American Airlines domestic flights and international services that use US Customs pre-clearance (notably from Canada and Ireland). It has its own SEPTA Airport Line station — the closest rail connection to the secure zone — making it the most transit-friendly terminal at PHL.

Terminals B & C — American Airlines Hub

Terminals B and C are exclusively operated by American Airlines for domestic flights and form the core of AA’s Philadelphia hub. The two concourses share a single ticketing hall and baggage claim and are connected mid-concourse by a dining and retail corridor known as the Philadelphia Marketplace, which houses the Admirals Club and some of the best food options in the airport.

Terminal D — Airlines & Delta Sky Club

Terminal D is a mid-airport terminal serving several non-American carriers, including the full range of domestic and Canada-bound United and Delta flights. It shares a post-security connector — and the only open non-American security checkpoint — with Terminal E next door.

Terminal E — JetBlue, Southwest & Frontier

Terminal E handles JetBlue, Frontier and Southwest departures alongside a SEPTA station that gives it a direct rail connection to Center City. It shares a post-security walkway and security checkpoint with Terminal D, and free shuttle buses connect it to the more distant Terminal F.

Terminal F — Southwest Airlines

Terminal F is the easternmost and most expansive terminal at PHL, home primarily to Southwest Airlines. It has a distinctive three-concourse layout — a central spine with two branches — and is the furthest point from Terminal A-West, roughly a 30-minute walk or a quick shuttle ride away.

Getting to Philadelphia Airport

All ground transportation departs from the arrivals level of each terminal, outside baggage claim. The SEPTA Airport Regional Rail Line is the fastest and most reliable link to Center City — it stops at four stations directly connected to the terminals and costs a fraction of a taxi. PHL has five terminal parking garages (A through E/F), economy long-stay parking on Island Avenue and valet parking between Terminals D and E. Note that Garage C has partial availability during its 2026 renovation — allow extra time or use an adjacent garage.

Arriving passengers land at their respective terminal concourse and walk airside to the terminal building, where escalators and elevators descend to the arrivals (lower) level and baggage claim. Carousels are located outside the terminal buildings, across the ground-level roadway from the parking garages. International passengers not using US pre-clearance clear US Customs and Border Protection at Terminal A-West before proceeding to baggage claim.

Ground Transportation from Arrivals

Taxis, rideshares, hotel and rental car shuttles, and SEPTA buses all depart from Zone 1 on the arrivals roadway outside baggage claim at each terminal. The SEPTA Airport Line platforms are accessed by a walkway from each terminal building — follow the rail symbol. For Terminals D, E and F, the platforms are at the Terminal C/D and E/F stations. Terminal F passengers use the E/F SEPTA station. If collecting a passenger by car, use the free cell phone waiting lot and proceed to the arrivals curbside when notified.

Departing passengers check in at their airline’s ticket counter on the upper (departures) level of their terminal, then proceed to one of the two active security checkpoints — Terminal A-East for flights in A, B or C, and the D/E connector checkpoint for flights in D, E or F. After clearing security the full network of gates is accessible by foot or free shuttle within the secure zone, so you can use any terminal’s restaurants, lounges and shops before your flight.

Recommended Arrival Times

Arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. PHL can experience heavy security queues during the 5–9 a.m. morning bank and the 3–7 p.m. afternoon peak. Check-in counters typically close 45 minutes before departure. Gate assignments are on the flight information screens throughout the terminal and on your airline’s app.

Insider Tips

Only two security checkpoints are open at PHL in 2026 — build in extra time if there are events in Philadelphia (Eagles games, concerts at Citizens Bank Park) as queues can double. The SEPTA Airport Line is your best bet: it is almost always faster than a cab on I-95 during rush hour and drops you directly inside the city grid. Flying American through Terminals B or C? Enter security at A-East — it is the nearest open checkpoint. For connections, the D–E walkway is seamless; shuttle buses to A-East and F run every few minutes. PHL has significantly improved its dining in recent years — Termini Bros Bakery, La Colombe coffee and Chickie’s & Pete’s crab fries are all genuinely worth your time.
