San Antonio Airport Terminals Overview
San Antonio International Airport has two terminals: Terminal A and Terminal B. They sit side by side and share the same building, connected on both levels via walkways in the landside (pre-security) area. Once you have cleared security in either terminal you are restricted to that terminal’s gates and cannot cross to the other without exiting security and re-entering.
Terminal A is the larger of the two, handling all international flights and serving the majority of airlines. Terminal B is smaller and is the home of American Airlines and United Airlines. A third terminal — Terminal C — is currently under construction as part of the $2.5 billion ELEVATE/SAT expansion program.
Terminal Levels
San Antonio Airport Terminal A
Terminal A is the main terminal at San Antonio Airport, built in 1984 and handling all international arrivals and the majority of domestic airlines. Gates A1–A7 are in the south concourse and gates A8–A17 are in the north concourse. In March 2026, SAT opened a new Ground Load Facility attached to the east end of Terminal A, adding three new gate positions where passengers board and exit aircraft via outdoor ramps rather than jet bridges.
All international arrivals clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Terminal A before collecting baggage. The CBP facility is open daily 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. — check with your airline for specific instructions. The new Ground Load Facility primarily serves ultra-low-cost carriers (Frontier, Spirit, Volaris) operating narrow-body jets.
Terminal A Security Checkpoints
Terminal A has two security checkpoints, both with TSA PreCheck. The first is located near gates A1–A7 (south concourse) and has CLEAR for expedited screening. The second is near gates A8–A12 (north concourse) and also has TSA PreCheck. Both checkpoints lead to the same airside area, so you can use whichever has the shorter queue.
San Antonio Airport Terminal B
Terminal B is connected to Terminal A in the northwest section of the main building. It is smaller than Terminal A, with 8 jet-bridge gates (B1–B8), and serves American Airlines and United Airlines exclusively. Passengers arriving via the Parking Garage can reach Terminal B via an escalator and pedestrian bridge at the mezzanine level.
Terminal B has one security checkpoint at the entrance to the concourse, with TSA PreCheck. A $100 million renovation of Terminal B is planned as part of the ELEVATE/SAT program. Charging stations are located before and after the security checkpoint and near gates B1A and B4–B6.
Terminal C — Under Construction (Opening 2028)
SAT’s future Terminal C is the centrepiece of the $2.5 billion ELEVATE/SAT expansion. The 18-gate, 850,000 sq ft facility broke ground in October 2023 and is expected to open in 2028. Six of the 18 gates will be able to handle widebody aircraft. Terminal C is being built adjacent to Terminal B and will have its own drop-off and pick-up lanes on Terminal Drive (currently under construction). Southwest Airlines, which holds the largest passenger share at SAT, will not be included in the new terminal following a court ruling in 2024 and will continue operating from Terminal A.
As of March 2026, Terminal C construction is in Phase 4. Pickup and drop-off lane closures on Terminal Drive have begun near the Terminal C construction site. Travelers are advised to follow current airport signage and allow extra time for ground-level access.
Walking Between Terminals at San Antonio Airport
Terminals A and B are connected before security and passengers can move freely between them on both the upper (departures) and lower (arrivals) levels. However, once you have cleared security in either terminal you cannot cross to the other — the two concourses are separate secure zones with no airside connection. If you need to change terminals after clearing security (for example, if your gate has changed), you must exit through the arrivals area, re-check in at the new terminal’s ticket counter if necessary, and pass through that terminal’s security checkpoint. Always confirm your terminal and gate with your airline’s app before leaving home.
Connection Times
SAT is a compact airport and the walk between Terminals A and B on the departures level takes only a few minutes. Given the airport’s modest size, minimum connection time is typically 45 minutes for domestic flights, though airlines may quote a longer minimum. If your connecting flight is in the same terminal, 30 minutes is usually sufficient if you are already airside. If you need to change terminals, allow at least 45–60 minutes to account for exiting and re-clearing security.

San Antonio Airport Map — Arrivals
Arriving passengers land in either Terminal A or Terminal B depending on their airline. After deplaning, follow signs to baggage claim on the lower level. International arrivals land in Terminal A and must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before collecting their bags — the CBP facility in Terminal A is open daily 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. Domestic arrivals proceed directly to baggage claim carousels on the lower level of their respective terminal. Ground transportation, ride-share, taxis and the VIA bus stop are all on the outer curb of the lower arrivals roadway.
San Antonio Airport Map — Departures
Departing passengers enter via the upper (departures) roadway for curbside drop-off, or via the covered walkway from the Parking Garage. Check in at your airline’s ticket counter on the upper level of your terminal (A or B), then proceed to the relevant security checkpoint. After clearing security, follow signs to your gate — south concourse (A1–A7) or north concourse (A8–A17) in Terminal A, or the single concourse in Terminal B (B1–B8). Passengers departing from the Ground Load Facility gates will proceed to the east end of Terminal A and board via outdoor ramps.
Recommended Arrival Times
SAT advises arriving at least 90 minutes before domestic departures and two hours before international flights. Security wait times at SAT typically remain under 15 minutes, but during peak morning hours (5:00–9:00 a.m.) and holiday periods queues can be longer. Check-in counters close approximately 45 minutes before departure. Confirm your terminal before you arrive, as several airlines (including United) operate from both Terminal A and Terminal B depending on the route.
Insider Tips
San Antonio is in the Central Time Zone — set your watch on arrival. Confirm your terminal before you leave home: United flies from both Terminal A and Terminal B depending on the route, and Southwest is in Terminal A only. During Terminal C construction (2026–2028), expect reduced roadway access near Terminal B and follow airport signage carefully. If renting a car, the Consolidated Rental Car Center shuttle runs every few minutes from the arrivals level of both terminals — no need to book a specific brand shuttle. For the best Tex-Mex at the airport, La Gloria in Terminal A is a local favourite. The River Walk, the Alamo and the Pearl District are all under 30 minutes from SAT by taxi or ride-share.
