Stansted Airport Map

The Stansted Airport map below shows the full layout of London Stansted Airport (STN/EGSS). Stansted had its busiest year on record in 2025, handling over 30 million passengers for the first time — a milestone driven by capacity growth from Ryanair, Jet2 and Pegasus Airlines, with Dublin, Istanbul and Edinburgh topping the most popular routes. It is the fourth busiest airport in the United Kingdom and serves over 200 destinations across Europe, North Africa and beyond, with Ryanair alone covering 150 of them from its largest base anywhere in the world.

As the Stansted Airport map shows, the layout is unique. The terminal building — designed by Norman Foster and opened in 1991 — sits at the centre of the site, handling check-in, security and arrivals. No gates are inside the main terminal. Instead, all departure gates are housed in three separate satellite buildings reached by the automated Transit System people mover or on foot via walkways. Study the STN airport map before you travel to understand which satellite your airline uses and how long it takes to reach your gate.

Stansted Airport Terminal

London Stansted Airport has a single passenger terminal that handles all scheduled flights. The terminal building is divided into three functional areas: the front section holds check-in zones (labelled A through K) and landside arrivals; the southern end is the Departures zone with security and the airside lounge; and the northern end is the International Arrivals hall where passengers clear UK Border Control. A separate domestic arrivals exit near the railway station serves Common Travel Area passengers arriving without passport control.

🚧
Stansted Transformation (2026 onwards): The Transit System people mover is scheduled for decommissioning in summer 2026 and will be replaced by new Sky Link pedestrian walkways to all three satellite buildings. The main terminal extension (16,000 sq m) begins summer 2027, with departure lounge fit-out and a new multi-storey car park completing in 2028. The overall £1.1 billion programme targets capacity of 43 million passengers. During the transition period, gate access may change — check stanstedairport.com before you travel.

Check-In

Check-in desks are on the ground floor of the main terminal, divided into zones labelled A through K. The zone for your airline is shown on your booking confirmation or on the flight information screens as you enter the terminal. Self-service kiosks and bag drop are available alongside staffed desks for most carriers. Ryanair requires online check-in before arrival — you can use the bag drop desks at the airport.

🔒 Security
One main security checkpoint after check-in. Fast Track lanes available (pre-book from £6.49). Peak queues during early morning departures — allow extra time between 4 and 8 a.m.
🍸 World Duty Free
All passengers pass through World Duty Free immediately after clearing security before entering the main Departures Lounge. Allow time for this when planning your route to the gate.
🏷 Departures Lounge
Central lounge with restaurants, cafes, shops and the Airline Information Desk. The lounge connects to the Transit System and walkways for all three satellite gate buildings.

Stansted Airport Security

There is one main security checkpoint at London Stansted Airport, located between check-in and the Departures Lounge. Fast Track security lanes are available to pre-book from £6.49 per person, and a Fast Track Passport Control option is also bookable for arrivals. The airport has consistently achieved 99% of passengers clearing security within 15 minutes during normal operations, though early morning peak hours (4 to 8 a.m.) can see longer queues. After security, all passengers pass through a mandatory World Duty Free walkthrough before entering the central Departures Lounge.

💡
Security Tip: Always pre-book Fast Track at Stansted if your departure is between 4 and 9 a.m. — this is one of the few UK airports where the standard lanes can get significantly congested during early bank of morning departures. Once through security, note that some gate satellite areas are a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Departures Lounge. Check your gate early.

The Transit System & Gate Access

🚆 After security: The automated Transit System runs airside only, every few minutes, to Satellite 1 (Gates 1–19, ~4 min) and Satellite 2 (Gates 20–39, ~7 min). Satellite 3 (Gates 40–59) is walk-only: roughly 10–15 minutes from the Departures Lounge. Remote stand APV gates (90–95) are reached by bus from below the terminal during peak morning hours. Note: the Transit System is due to close in summer 2026 and be replaced by Sky Link pedestrian walkways.

Stansted Airport Satellite 1 — Gates 1 to 19

Satellite 1 is the closest satellite building to the main terminal, reached by the Transit System in about 4 minutes. It was redeveloped from 2013 with the aim of attracting more long-haul and charter carriers. Satellite 1 is home to the Essence by Escape Lounges, which opened in March 2026 and accepts Priority Pass, DragonPass and Lounge Key. The lounge is only accessible to passengers departing from Gates 1 to 19.

Gate assignments are not fixed by airline — always confirm your satellite building on your boarding pass or the flight information screens. Ryanair occasionally uses Satellite 1 gates, though the majority of Ryanair flights depart from Satellite 2 and 3.

Stansted Airport Satellite 2 — Gates 20 to 39

Satellite 2 is the primary home of Ryanair operations, handling the bulk of the airport’s high frequency, short-haul departures. It is reached by the Transit System in about 7 minutes. The satellite is currently undergoing an upgrade and modernisation programme including new flooring, lighting and gate seating, with gate areas being reconfigured to create conventional gate rooms with more pre-boarding space.

Satellite 2 is undergoing modernisation through 2026. Expect some gate area reconfigurations during this period. It will be connected by a new Sky Link pedestrian walkway once the Transit System decommissions in summer 2026.

Stansted Airport Satellite 3 — Gates 40 to 59

Satellite 3 is the furthest gate building from the main terminal, accessible only on foot via the pedestrian walkway — a brisk 10 to 15 minute walk from the central Departures Lounge. The furthest gates in Satellite 3 (around Gate 59) sit approximately 1 to 1.2 kilometres from the security exit. Allow extra time if you are travelling with children or reduced mobility. Ryanair and a range of other carriers use these gates, particularly during busy departure peaks.

Do not get too comfortable in duty-free if your gate is in Satellite 3. Once you see your gate number, head straight there. A Sky Link walkway is planned to improve access to Satellite 3 as part of the 2026 expansion works.

Stansted Airport APV Building — Remote Stand Gates

The APV (Advanced Passenger Vehicle) building is a bus gate facility located near the main terminal. It serves remote stand departures, primarily during the busy 6 to 9 a.m. peak window. Gates in this area (90 to 95) are reached by bus from below the terminal building. This is a practical if unglamorous part of how Stansted manages its high volume of early morning Ryanair departures.

Remote stand gates involve a bus transfer across the apron. This is faster than it sounds — the bus departs promptly. Follow airport signs to the APV departure area beneath the terminal.

Getting Between Satellites on the Stansted Airport Map

Unlike multi-terminal airports, everyone at Stansted departs from the same building. Once through security you cannot re-clear, so you are free to move between satellite areas. The Transit System connects the main terminal to Satellite 1 and Satellite 2 in a few minutes. Satellite 3 is reached solely on foot via the pedestrian walkway. You cannot walk between satellites directly — all routes go back through the central Departures Lounge area.

Gate Access Times at a Glance

From the security exit, allow roughly 4 minutes by Transit to Gates 1 to 19, about 7 minutes by Transit to Gates 20 to 39, and 10 to 15 minutes on foot to Gates 40 to 59. The furthest gate (Gate 59) is around 1.2 kilometres from the security exit. During very busy periods, the Transit System queue can add a few minutes. Build in at least 30 to 45 minutes between clearing security and your boarding time, especially for Satellite 3 gates.

Stansted Airport Lounges

Lounge options at Stansted are limited but have expanded in 2026. The main option is the Essence by Escape Lounges, which opened in March 2026 in Satellite 1 (Gates 1 to 19) following the closure of the original Escape Lounge. It accepts Priority Pass, DragonPass and Lounge Key memberships, and is available to passengers departing on eligible airlines from Satellite 1. Pre-booking is recommended. An Escape Lounge in the main departures area is expected to return at a future date as part of the transformation programme. Note that you cannot access the Satellite 1 lounge if your gate is in Satellite 2 or 3 without walking back.

Getting to Stansted Airport

The Stansted Express rail station is directly beneath the main terminal building, making it one of the most convenient airport rail connections in the UK. All ground transport for arrivals operates from the terminal building’s arrivals and ground floor level.

🚆 Stansted Express
Direct train to London Liverpool Street: 45–53 min. Also calls at Tottenham Hale (17 min). Every 15 minutes. From £9.45 one-way when booked in advance.
🚌 National Express Coach
Services to 38 London pick-up points including Victoria, Liverpool Street and King’s Cross. Runs 24 hours a day. From £5 one-way in advance. Slightly longer journey than the train.
🚕 Taxi & Ride-Share
Official taxi provider 24x7 Taxis (01279 661111) — desk in international arrivals. Uber and other ride-share services available with designated pick-up zone. Central London typically £60–£90.
🚗 Car Rental
Major agencies (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and others) have desks in the arrivals area. Cars are collected in the terminal building, no transfer bus required.
💡
Rail Tip: The Stansted Express is the fastest and most comfortable option to central London, but Liverpool Street is in the City and far from most leisure hotels. If you’re heading to central or west London, change at Tottenham Hale for the Victoria line — it connects directly to King’s Cross, Oxford Circus and Victoria. National Express coaches can be better value for groups and stop closer to many hotels.

Stansted Airport Map — Arrivals

Passengers arriving at Stansted either walk or take the Transit System back from their satellite to the main terminal building. International passengers (from outside the Common Travel Area) clear UK Border Control in the International Arrivals hall on the northern end of the terminal. ePassport gates are available for eligible UK, EU and selected other passport holders. After immigration, baggage reclaim carousels are clearly signed in the main arrivals hall. Domestic and Common Travel Area passengers (arriving from Ireland, for example) use a separate exit route, bypassing Border Force but not Customs, connected by a bus upon landing.

Meeting Arrivals at Stansted

Meeting passengers is straightforward — everyone exits through the single International Arrivals hall. The official taxi desk (24x7 Taxis) has a courtesy phone in domestic baggage reclaim. Uber and ride-share pick-up is in a designated zone outside the terminal. If you are driving, use the Mid Stay car park for a free first 60 minutes — it’s the most cost-effective option for meeting a flight without paying Express Set Down charges.

Stansted Airport Map — Departures

For departures, enter the terminal and locate your check-in zone (A through K) on the departure screens. Check in and drop bags, then proceed to the single security checkpoint. After clearing security and passing through the World Duty Free walkthrough, enter the central Departures Lounge and check the flight information screens for your satellite. Gate numbers are usually shown on your boarding pass but can change — always confirm before leaving the Departures Lounge, as you cannot easily return from a satellite once there.

Recommended Arrival Times

Arrive at least 2 hours before all flights. Ryanair closes check-in desks 40 minutes before departure, so earlier is safer. During peak morning slots (4 to 8 a.m.) and school holiday periods, allow 2.5 hours to be safe. The airport handled 53,000 departing passengers in a single day in July 2025 — security can feel the pressure during these spikes. Fast Track is worth purchasing for early departures.

Insider Tips

The furthest gates at Stansted (Gates 50 to 59 in Satellite 3) are over a kilometre from the security exit on foot. Do not browse duty-free for too long if you have one of these gates. Gate numbers usually appear on departure screens 30 to 45 minutes before boarding, which does not leave much time for Satellite 3. Pre-book Fast Track for any departure before 9 a.m. The Stansted Express is by far the most reliable way to reach the airport from London — avoid driving during morning rush hours on the M11 if you can. For families and travellers with heavy bags, Meet and Greet parking pays for itself in stress reduction. Refer to the Stansted Airport map above to get familiar with the layout before you travel.
