Tampa International Airport is located 6 miles (10 km) west of downtown Tampa in Hillsborough County, Florida. Tampa Airport Terminal — Main Terminal

The Main Terminal is the sole landside building at Tampa International Airport. It handles all check-in, baggage claim and ground transportation. TPA uses a colour-coded wayfinding system — airlines are split into Blue and Red groups, each with dedicated curbside drop-off lanes, ticket counters and baggage carousels.

Tampa Airport Security Checkpoints

Unlike most airports, Tampa Airport security is not in the Main Terminal. Instead, TPA has four separate TSA checkpoints — one at the entrance to each airside. After checking in on Level 2, you take the elevator or escalator to Level 3 and board the automated shuttle to your airside. Security screening happens when you arrive at the airside.

Tampa Airport Airside A

Tampa Airport Airside A is in the southeast corner of the airport. As shown on the Tampa Airport map, it is one of four satellite buildings connected to the Main Terminal by automated shuttle.

Tampa Airport Airside C — Southwest Airlines Hub

Tampa Airport Airside C is in the northeast corner of the airport, dominated by Southwest Airlines. Southwest operates the majority of gates here, making Airside C its busiest station at TPA.

Tampa Airport Airside E — Delta Air Lines Hub

Tampa Airport Airside E is in the northwest corner of the airport. Delta Air Lines is the dominant carrier here, with Frontier and Air Canada also operating from this airside.

Tampa Airport Airside F — International Terminal

Tampa Airport Airside F is in the southwest corner and serves as TPA’s primary international gateway. U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities are on the lower level. American Airlines is the largest domestic carrier here, alongside European, Caribbean and Latin American airlines.

Walking Between Airsides on the Tampa Airport Map

You cannot walk directly between airsides at Tampa Airport. The four airside satellites are separate buildings, each connected to the Main Terminal by its own dedicated automated shuttle. To transfer between airsides for a connecting flight, ride the shuttle back to the Main Terminal on Level 3, then board the shuttle to your new airside.

Connection Times Between Airsides

Each shuttle ride between the Main Terminal and an airside takes approximately two minutes. A transfer between airsides — riding back to the terminal and taking a different shuttle — takes roughly 10 minutes in total. You do not need to re-clear security when transferring between airsides, as the shuttle system operates within the secure zone. Allow at least 45 minutes for connections between different airsides to account for shuttle wait times and walking to your gate.

Tampa Airport Map — Arrivals

If you are arriving at Tampa Airport or meeting a passenger, the arrivals area is on Level 1 of the Main Terminal. After landing, passengers take the automated shuttle from their airside back to the Main Terminal, then proceed down to Level 1 for baggage claim. International arrivals clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection on the lower level of Airside F before boarding the shuttle.

Ground Transportation from Arrivals

Baggage carousels are split into Blue (belts 1–7) and Red (belts 9–15) sections on Level 1. From there you can access ride-share pick-up at the Red or Blue Express Curbside, the SkyConnect train to the Rental Car Center, and hotel shuttles. If picking someone up by car, use the free cell phone waiting lot and collect your passenger from the Level 1 arrivals kerb.

Departing passengers should enter the Main Terminal on Level 2 via Blue Departures Drive or Red Departures Drive (check your airline’s colour assignment). Check in at your airline’s ticket counter, then take the elevator or escalator up to Level 3 and board the automated shuttle to your airside (A, C, E or F). You will clear TSA security when you arrive at the airside, not in the Main Terminal.

Recommended Arrival Times

Arrive at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and 2.5 hours before international flights. TPA’s compact layout means you can reach your gate quickly once through security, but allow extra time during spring break (March–April) and holiday periods when the airport can exceed 90,000 passengers per day.

Insider Tips

Tampa Airport is consistently rated among the best in North America for its design and ease of navigation. The Red/Blue colour system starts on the highway approach and guides you all the way to your baggage carousel — follow your colour and you will not get lost. If returning a rental car, use the Remote Bag Check on Level 4 of the Rental Car Center to drop bags before boarding SkyConnect, skipping the Main Terminal ticket counters entirely.
