Athens Airport Security Wait Times Today

The Athens Airport security wait times below show the typical ATH queue at each terminal for this hour and day of week. Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH/LGAV) is Greece’s largest airport and among the fifteen busiest in Europe by passenger volume. Its single main building handles both Schengen European and non-Schengen international departures across two halls, while a connected Satellite Terminal takes on overflow traffic from low-cost carriers during the summer peak. Wait times at ATH security vary considerably by terminal, destination type, time of day and season, and have been further complicated since March 2026 by the EU Entry/Exit System adding processing time at passport control.

How these Athens Airport security wait time estimates work. Athens Airport does not publish a public live wait time feed, so these values are calculated from documented ATH peak patterns, day-of-week variance and seasonal crowd data. Actual queues on the day vary by terminal, staffing and season. For flight status and current conditions, use the Schiphol—sorry, the AIA app or visit aia.gr. How Long Is Security at Athens Airport?

Security wait times at Athens Airport are generally manageable during off-peak periods but can become significant during the summer tourist season, which is by far the busiest period of the year for ATH. During quieter weekday windows between 10:00 and 13:00, most passengers clear the Main Terminal security checkpoint in 10 to 20 minutes. During the early-morning departure wave between 04:30 and 08:00, and throughout the July and August peak, waits of 30 to 50 minutes in the standard lane are not unusual. Early Saturday and Sunday mornings in summer are consistently the most congested periods.

Two factors have made the overall processing experience at ATH longer since early 2026. First, the EU Entry/Exit System launched on 30 March 2026, requiring non-EU nationals to register biometric data on their first Schengen entry, adding a step at passport control that can back up the queue behind it. Second, a €1.3 billion expansion programme announced in April 2026 will eventually add 150,000 square metres of terminal space and additional security capacity, though most construction work will run through 2028. In the meantime, Athens Airport advises all passengers to arrive at least 2.5 hours before scheduled departure.

🚧
EES is live at Athens Airport from 30 March 2026: The EU Entry/Exit System now applies to all non-EU and non-EEA nationals entering the Schengen Area. At ATH, this affects passengers departing from Hall A (non-Schengen international routes) who must pass through passport control. EES registration can significantly extend processing time during peak periods. Athens Airport warns that late arrival at the departure gate due to EES delays may result in denied boarding. Allow extra time if you hold a non-EU passport.

Athens Airport Security Wait Times by Terminal

Athens International Airport operates two terminal buildings, both accessed from the same landside area. Your terminal is determined by your airline and route, not by a check-in desk choice. Check your boarding pass or the ATH departures board for your gate code: gates beginning A or B are in the Main Terminal; gates beginning C are in the Satellite Terminal.

Main Terminal Security (Hall A and Hall B)

MT

10 to 20 minutes off-peak on weekdays. During the 04:30 to 08:00 peak in summer, expect 30 to 50 minutes in the standard lane. Hall A passengers on non-Schengen routes face an additional passport control step, which adds 10 to 20 minutes outside peak periods and considerably more when EES registration queues build up.

The Main Terminal is the primary and year-round facility at ATH, handling both Schengen European routes from Hall B and non-Schengen international departures from Hall A. Hall B passengers on Schengen flights and domestic Greek routes do not pass through passport control before their gate. Hall A passengers on international non-Schengen routes must pass through a separate passport control step after security, which adds to total processing time. Fast Lane priority security is available in the Main Terminal only, through your airline. Always confirm your hall with your airline before travelling, as gate assignments can change.

Satellite Terminal Security (Gates C)

ST
Satellite Terminal Security
Gates C · Schengen routes · Peak season operation (roughly May to October)

10 to 20 minutes off-peak. During morning low-cost departure waves in July and August, queues can reach 25 to 40 minutes. The Satellite Terminal is designed to decongest the Main Terminal during the Greek tourist season and primarily serves Schengen routes, so no separate passport control applies.

⚠ Standard X-ray screening⚠ Laptops must be removed from bag⚠ 100ml liquid limit applies⚠ Fast Lane not available here✓ Schengen flights only
RyanaireasyJetVuelingEurowingsWizz AirTransaviaNorwegianTUI fly Belgium

The Satellite Terminal is connected to the Main Terminal via an underground passage equipped with moving walkways, making transfers between the two buildings straightforward. It operates primarily from around May to October during the peak tourist season when the Main Terminal faces its highest passenger volumes. Outside the summer peak, some of the above airlines relocate operations back to the Main Terminal. Fast Lane security is not available at the Satellite Terminal: priority security access through Aegean or Olympic Air add-ons applies only in the Main Terminal. Always check your gate code on your boarding pass before heading through security.

💡
Liquid rules at Athens Airport security in 2026: Athens Airport has not confirmed a full CT scanner rollout as of April 2026. Standard X-ray screening applies across both terminals, which means laptops, tablets and other large electronics must be removed from hand luggage and placed separately in a screening tray. The 100ml per container liquid limit remains in effect. Liquids and gels must be in containers of 100ml or less and placed in a transparent resealable bag of no more than 1 litre capacity. Packing liquids in hold baggage entirely removes this friction at the tray conveyor.

Athens Airport Security Peak Hours and Best Times to Fly

The worst window for Athens Airport security wait times is 04:30 to 08:00 daily, driven by the early departure wave for domestic island routes and morning European connections departing before the midday heat. This window is especially punishing on Saturday and Sunday mornings during the summer, when charter and leisure traffic peaks. July and August are the absolute worst months at ATH by a significant margin, reflecting Greece’s status as one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.

The quietest windows for Athens Airport security are 10:00 to 13:00 on weekdays, and late evenings from 21:00 onwards. A midweek midday departure from the Main Terminal can clear security in under 15 minutes. January and February are the quietest months overall at ATH, though EES passport control can still add time for non-EU travellers arriving from or departing to non-Schengen destinations year-round.

📅 Quietest Days at ATH
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are consistently lighter at Athens. A Wednesday midday departure is typically the quietest combination available. January and February offer the shortest overall queues across the whole year.
📅 Busiest Days at ATH
Saturday and Sunday mornings in summer carry the heaviest load at ATH. Friday afternoons and Monday mornings also see elevated traffic. The Saturday 05:00 to 08:00 window in July is the single worst slot of the year.
☀️ Summer Peak at Athens
July and August add 40 to 60 percent to typical wait times. Greek school holidays and Easter week also cause notable build-up. The Christmas period is busy by Athens standards but still well below summer peak volumes.
📄 EES adds time for non-EU travellers
Since 30 March 2026, non-EU nationals face EES biometric registration at passport control. This adds time on top of security for Hall A non-Schengen departures. Allow at least 2.5 hours before departure if you hold a non-EU passport.

Athens Airport Priority Security Options

Athens Airport does not sell a single per-trip priority security pass to the general public via the airport website. Priority security access at ATH is instead provided by individual airlines through their own Fast Lane programmes. There are two main routes to faster security at Athens: airline Fast Lane, which is printed on your boarding pass, and business class or elite status with qualifying carriers, which includes Fast Lane automatically.

✈️ Aegean Airlines Fast Lane
Available to purchase for 4 to 11 euros per passenger when booking or through My Booking up to one hour before departure. Fast Lane is printed on your boarding pass. Available only at Main Terminal checkpoints. Gold Miles+Bonus and Star Alliance Gold holders receive it free.
✈️ Olympic Air Fast Lane
Available as a paid add-on for 4 to 11 euros per passenger through Olympic Air booking channels or My Booking up to one hour before departure. Business class passengers receive Fast Lane access automatically. Available at Main Terminal only.
✈️ Sky Express Fast Lane
Sky Express offers its own Fast Lane (SKY Fast Lane) at Athens, with pricing available at the time of booking. Business class (Bliss) passengers and SKY enjoy fare holders on domestic routes receive it free. Check avia.skyexpress.gr at the time of booking for current pricing.
📧 Business Class and Elite Status
Business class passengers and holders of Gold or higher frequent flyer status with Aegean, Olympic Air, Sky Express and Star Alliance partners receive Fast Lane access automatically. Fast Lane is included in your boarding pass and is personal to the ticketed passenger only.
📄 Fast Lane at ATH is inexpensive and worth it in summer. During the July and August morning peak, the standard lane can add 30 to 50 minutes. Adding Aegean or Olympic Air Fast Lane at booking costs 4 to 11 euros and removes most of that wait. Note: Fast Lane is only available in the Main Terminal. If your gate is in the Satellite Terminal, no priority lane option is currently available.

Recommended Arrival Times at Athens Airport

Athens Airport’s official guidance since the March 2026 EES launch is to arrive at least 2.5 hours before all departures. For non-Schengen international flights from Hall A, where security is followed by a separate passport control step, 3 hours is a safer target during any peak period. During July and August, adding a further 30 minutes on top of either recommendation is advisable. Check-in for most airlines at ATH opens 3 hours before departure, and hold baggage drop typically closes 45 minutes before scheduled departure.

🌎 Non-Schengen International (Hall A)
Arrive 3 hours before departure. Allow for the separate passport control step in addition to security. Non-EU passport holders face EES registration which can significantly extend processing time. Add 30 minutes in July and August.
🇪🇺 Schengen European (Hall B)
Arrive 2.5 hours before departure. No passport control step required. Add 30 minutes during the summer tourist season and Greek school holiday periods.
🛠️ Low-Cost Schengen (Satellite Terminal)
Arrive 2.5 hours before departure. Allow time for the underground passage between terminals if you need to recheck your gate. Fast Lane is not available in the Satellite Terminal.
⏳ Check-in Close Times
Hold baggage check-in typically closes 45 minutes before departure at most ATH carriers. Online check-in and self-service bag drop are available for Aegean and Olympic Air and cut landside time noticeably.

Tips to Beat Athens Airport Security Queues

A few targeted choices make a real difference to your ATH security experience, particularly during the summer peak season.

Athens Airport Layout and Terminal Overview

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is Greece’s sole major international gateway and the primary hub for Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. In 2025 it served a record 34 million passengers across 164 destinations in 55 countries, reaching 2nd place in international connectivity rankings among major European airports according to Airports Council International Europe. The airport opened in 2001 on a site in Spata, approximately 20 kilometres east of central Athens city centre.

The airport operates a Main Terminal that handles the majority of year-round traffic across two halls: Hall A (non-Schengen international routes, Gates A1 to A13) and Hall B (Schengen European routes and domestic Greek destinations, Gates B19 to B31). A Satellite Terminal connected via an underground passage with moving walkways opens during the peak summer season to handle low-cost carrier overflow on Schengen routes from Gates C. A €1.3 billion expansion announced in April 2026 aims to raise annual capacity to 40 million passengers by 2032 through a significant enlargement of both terminal buildings. Athens is served by metro (Line 3, journey time around 40 minutes from Syntagma) and by suburban railway from Larissa station.
